Japanese Oaks produces rare Group 1 dead heat

Apapane and Saint Emilion dueled through the straight at Tokyo Racecourse in a thrilling battle to the finish line in the Yushun Himba (Jpn-G1) (Japanese Oaks) with neither game filly willing to concede an inch.

Apapane, winner of the Oka Sho (Jpn-G1) (Japanese One Thousand Guineas) on April 11, and improving Group 2 winner Saint Emilion flashed across the finish line together. After an extended delay while track stewards examined the photo finish, the race was declared a dead heat and winning jockeys Masayoshi Ebina (Apapane) and Norihiro Yokoyama (Saint Emilion) shared an enthusiastic embrace.

The Japanese Oaks was run for the first time as an international Group 1 event and the dead heat for the victory was a first in Japan Racing Association history in a Group 1 race. The winning time was 2:29.90 for 2,400 meters (11.93 furlongs) on turf rated as good.

Apapane, sent off as the 3.80-to-1 favorite in the Oaks, became the 12th horse to win both the Japanese One Thousand Guineas and Japanese Oaks. She would complete a sweep of the Japanese Triple Crown for fillies with a win in October in the Shuka Sho (Jpn-G1) at Kyoto Racecourse.

Apapane, by 2004 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) winner King Kamehameha, improved to five wins in seven starts for trainer Sakae Kunieda and owner-breeder Kaneko Makoto Holdings Co. She is out of stakes-placed winner Salty Bid, by Salt Lake.

Saint Emilion prepped for the Japanese Oaks with a clear win in the Sankei Sports Sho Flora Stakes (Jpn-G2) at 2,000 meters (9.94 furlongs). With the Oaks win, she boosted her record to four wins from five starts for owner Teruya Yoshida and trainer Masaaki Koga. By 2004 Japan Cup (Jpn-G1) winner Zenno Rob Roy, Saint Emilion was produced by French group stakes winner Moteck, by Last Tycoon (Ire).

Nimaru Otome set the tempo in the Japanese Oaks with Agnes Waltz a few lengths behind in second and Apapane and Saint Elilion reserved in midpack in the field of 18 three-year-old fillies. Agnes Waltz surged to the lead entering the long, uphill straight but was no match for the winners, who surged past with about 200 meters remaining. Agnes Waltz finished two lengths back in third.
