Trainer Mike de Kock confirmed on Tuesday on his website that Group 1 winner Eagle Mountain (GB) has been retired because of a tendon injury sustained while training in Dubai.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum’s six-year-old by Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) won the 2008 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup (HK-G1) among four group stakes victories during five seasons of racing.
Eagle Mountain finished second in the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) as a four-year-old in 2008. In 2007, he finished second in the Vodafone Epsom Derby (Eng-G1) and Emirates Airline Champion Stakes (Eng-G1).
"This is his third career-threatening injury and enough is enough,” de Kock said. “He's been a great servant to Sheikh Mohammed and the stable and did us proud.”
Eagle Mountain amassed five wins, seven seconds, and one third and earnings of $3,521,721 from 19 career starts. Purchased by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum after his three-year-old season, Eagle Mountain is out of the winning Darshaan mare Masskana, dam of Group 1 winner and French highweight Sulk (Ire).
“Eagle Mountain's future as a stallion is being discussed and we will entertain offers for him,'' de Kock continued. “He has an amazing race record and was one of the best horses I have ever worked with."
