An injury sidelined multiple Group 1 winner Theseo for much of last year, but the six-year-old Danewin gelding proved he was back on his game in his second start following a ten-month layoff.
Theseo battled back in the straight after he was headed by favorite Rangirangdoo in the $274,609 Patinack Chipping Norton Stakes (Aus-G1) and dug in gamely in the final strides to win by a head on Saturday at Warwick Farm.
Theseo covered 1,600 meters (7.95 furlongs) in 1:37.45 under Nash Rawiller on turf rated as slow. He posted his fourth Group 1 win for trainer Gai Waterhouse and has won a stakes every year since 2006.
"He is just so tough," Rawiller told the Australian Associated Press. "The other horse [Rangirangdoo] was in front for a stride but my horse truly is a war horse. I can't say enough about him, and it's all credit to Gai for getting him here."
A half brother to Group 1 winner Star Shooter, Theseo is out of stakes-placed winner Ozone Sand, by L’Enjoleur.
Multiple group winner Rangirangdoo was 1 3/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher and multiple Group 1 winner Danleigh.
