Tabor snags Starspangledbanner ahead of Lightning Stakes

A private sale will place Age Caulfield Guineas (Aus-G1) winner Starspangledbanner in the colors of Michael Tabor in the Coolmore Lightning Stakes (Aus-G1) on Saturday at Flemington.

The deal was pending after the four-year-old Choisir colt passed veterinary inspections on Thursday, trainer Leon Corstens told the Australian Associated Press.

According to The Age newspaper, Starspangledbanner had been valued between $5.4-million and $9-million (6-million and 10-million Australian).

Starspangledbanner scored by 2¾ lengths in the Caulfield Guineas on October 10 for an ownership group headed by Brad Spicer.

Coolmore purchased his sire, Choisir, after he invaded from Australia to sweep the King's Stand Stakes (Eng-G2) and Golden Jubilee Stakes (Eng-G1) within four days at Royal Ascot in 2003, four months after winning the Lightning Stakes. Choisir stands at Coolmore Ireland and Coolmore Australia.

Starspangledbanner’s opposition on Saturday will include Cannonball, the first American-based horse to compete in Australia.
