Overdose returns home to extend win streak to 14

Posted: Sunday, August 15, 2010 3:15 PM

Hungarian superstar Overdose delivered a dominant victory in the Bestens-Pannonia Life Insurance Prize Stakes on Sunday at Kincsem Park in Budapest. The “Budapest Bullet” powered to the lead soon after the break and surged well clear in the final 300 meters to win by ten lengths.

The five-year-old Starborough horse improved to 14 wins from as many starts and won for the second time this season in his return from a foot injury that sidelined him for 15 months.

Overdose covered 1,000 meters (4.97 furlongs) in :56.40 and will be pointed to the Goldene Peitsche (Ger-G2) on August 29 at Baden-Baden.

"There were two criteria for today," owner Zoltan Micoczy told Racing Post. "One, that Overdose won by more than five lengths. And secondly, that the time was around 56 seconds. So, provided there are no problems in the next few days, he will head to Germany."

Gary Hind, who rode Overdose in his half-length win on July 18 at Bratislava, said the star sprinter felt much better on Sunday with a race under his belt.

"From the start his action was better today, and his time was very good considering the ground,” Hind said. "He is a unique horse and today was a special day with a very happy ending.

“I am a small wheel in a big chain but it's great to be part of it. No matter how much money I have, I can never buy moments like today."

Just for the record, Bratislava is in Slovakia, not Slovenia.

You're very good at stating your opinions (everywhere!) Jack, so let me make mine. This horse is coming off a 15 month layoff for a serious foot injury. During that time, the orginal plan had been to race at Royal Ascot in both the King Stands and Golden Jubilee stakes, the July Cup, the Nunthorpe, the Haydock Sprint Cup and the Pirx d'Abbey. Obviously that plan was scupperered, but connections were more than willing to enter the horse in Group 1 sprints. he even 'won' the void Abbey in 2008, in a faster time than the winner of the actual race! He's entered in a Group 2 at Baden-Baden then shoumnd be entered in the Abbey on Arc day. So give the horse a chance to get up to top form before slamming him. After all, we all know another undefeated horse who only sticks to their back garden.

Clearly. This horse has some talent. Or he wouldn't be 14 for 14. That said. Let's face it people. Hungary, Slovenia, Germany, and Italy aren't exactly known for their world class 6 furlong sprinters. Let me see Overdose go to the Nunthorpe Stakes and out-sprint Starspangledbanner,Equiano, or Kinsale King. Or let me see Overdose go to Hong Kong and out-sprint Sacred Kingdom or Rocket Man. If I see Overdose accomplish that? Then we'll talk about how good of a sprinter that he may or may not be. But running away from nobody's in Hungary and Slovenia. Which is where his two 2010 win's have been. Doesn't really impress me in the least. As far as I'm concerned. Off his recent win's in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot, and the Darley July Cup at York. Starspangledbanner is most certainly the best 6 furlong sprinter in Europe. While I'd say Sacred Kingdom is most certainly the best 6 furlong sprinter racing in Hong Kong and Singapore. If not the whole world. JMO.
