Sniper’s Bullet breaks long winless streak in Railway Stakes

Posted: Saturday, November 21, 2009 2:38 PM

by Steve Bailey

Group 1 winner Sniper’s Bullet won for the first time in more than two years as he rallied on the turn and held off a late bid from two fast-closing challengers to win the Carlton Draught Railway Stakes (Aus-G1) by one length on Saturday at Ascot.

The six-year-old Bite the Bullet gelding, who finished second in last year’s 1,600-meter (7.95-furlong) Railway Stakes, had not reached the winner’s circle since capturing the 2007 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (Aus-G1), a span of 22 starts.

Ridden by Nash Rawiller, Sniper’s Bullet patiently raced outside pacesetter Keytomoney until making his move entering the home turn and digging in with determination in the straight. He covered the distance in 1:34.25 on turf rated good in the win.

Multiple Group 3 winner Tarzi and Colour Correct both closed gamely but could not overtake the winner, finishing second and third, respectively.

Trained by former jockey Tracey Bartley, Sniper’s Bullet won for the seventh time from 33 starts. He is out of the Yallah Prince mare Yallah Terrace.
