Group 1-placed winner Tenarin landed his most significant career victory in the Grande Premio Derby Paulista (Brz-G1), the third leg of Sao Paulo's Quadruple Crown, on Saturday at Hipodromo Cidade Jardim.
Overlooked at 11.20-to-1 odds, Tenarin gained command entering the stretch and rolled home a stylish one-length winner over dual Group 1 winner Timeo in the 15-horse field.
The Romarin (Brz) colt recorded his stakes win and capped a group stakes double for jockey Francisco Leandro.
Trained in Campinas by Antonio Luiz Cintra, Tenarin completed 2,400 meters (11.93 furlongs) in 2:24.59 on firm turf, eclipsing the previous stakes record of 2:25.30 set by Expressivo Willie in 2000.
Tenarin improved to two wins in ten starts for owners Joao Daniel Tikhomiroff’s and Silvio Crespi’s Stud C & T. His lone previous victory was on the turf at Cidade Jardim in a 1,400-meter (6.96-furlong) maiden race in April.
Eighth in the Grande Premio Ipiranga (Brz-G1), the series first leg, Tenarin entered off a creditable third-place finish on heavy turf in the Grande Premio Jockey Club de Sao Paulo (Brz-G1), the series second leg on October 3. The series concludes with the Grande Premio Consagracao (Brz-G1) on December 19.
Bred in Brazil by Fazenda e Haras Calunga A.P. Ltd., Tenarin is out of the winning Pleasant Variety mare Tenacite.
