Group 1-placed winner Apunta Alto stamped herself one of Chile’s top three-year-old fillies on dirt with a victory in the Clasico Alberto Solari Magnasco (Chi-G1) on Saturday at Hipodromo Chile.
Ridden by Nelson Figueroa, the Dynamix filly proved that her third-place finish in October against males in the Gran Criterium Mauricio Serrano Palma (Chi-G1) was no fluke by rallying to a three-quarter-length victory.
Haras El Sheik’s Angelica Mia, coupled in an entry with favorite and Mil Guineas (Chi-G1) winner Bonny and Clyde, finished second, well clear of Group 2 winner Cuan Linda. Bonny and Clyde finished a disappointing seventh in the eight-horse field.
Trained by co-owner Rafael Quiroz, Apunta Alto covered 2,000 meters (9.94 furlongs) in 2:08.07 on a track rated as good to register her second win in nine career starts for Stud Los Quirsan.
Third in the Tanteo de Potrancas (Chi-G1) during her juvenile season, Apunta Alto is expected to take another crack against males in the Clasico St. Leger (Chi-G1), the second leg of Chile’s national Triple Crown and the final Group 1 race this year for three-year-olds on dirt, on December 5.
Bred in Chile by Eugenio Zegers’ Haras Santa Olga, Apunta Alto is out of the Group 1-placed Hidden Source mare Naranja y Pina.
