Arranca El Sol cemented his credentials as Chile’s top two-year-old colt on the dirt with a come-from-behin, two-length victory in the Clasico Tanteo de Potrillos (Chi-G1) on Saturday at Hipodromo Chile in Santiago.
Sent off as the third choice and guided by Gonzalo Ulloa, Arranca El Sol made the most of the fast early fractions set by Capo Mastro and Gipsycom as he rallied boldly from the center of the track to inhale the leaders en route to an impressive victory.
Della Barba, away since March and ridden by Ulloa’s brother Hernan, finished second, 1 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Jazid. Group 2 winner Polar Emperor and favorite Lutier, who raced last early on, rounded out the top five in the 14-horse field.
Trained by Juan Pablo Baeza for owner Stud Burlesco, Arranca El Sol completed 1,500 meters (7.46 furlongs) in 1:30.99 on a dirt track rated as good to remain unbeaten in two starts. He entered off a 4 1/4-length debut victory at Hipodromo Chile on March 14.
Jockey Gonzalo Ulloa, trainer Juan Pablo Baeza, and breeder Eugenio Zegers Leon of Haras Santa Olga, celebrated their second Group 1 triumph in recent days after they teamed last week to capture the Premio Tanteo de Potrancas (Chi-G1) with undefeated Mensajera de La Luz.
Arranca El Sol is from the fourth Chilean crop of the A.P. Indy stallion Dynamix, a half brother to seven-time Chilean champion sire Hussonet. Dynamix currently ranks third on the Chilean general sire list.
Arranca El Sol is the first foal out of the winning Election Day mare Despues de La Luna.
