Solid favorite Truly Funny cemented his status as Valparaiso Sporting Club’s top juvenile with an easy victory in the Copa de Plata Italo Traverso Pasqualetti (Chi-G1), the final leg of that track’s Triple Crown series for Southern Hemisphere two-year-olds, on Wednesday at Vina del Mar.
The Gracioso colt, with Oscar Ulloa aboard, easily put away second choice Gran Rosquero with two furlongs remaining and drew clear late under a hand ride to comfortably win.
Haras Sumaya’s Arwa, by Speak In Passing, edged Group 2-placed winner El Innombrable in a four-horse photo for second in the 13-horse-field.
Truly Funny missed by a nose to Argentine-bred Polar Emperor in the El Estreno Nicanor Senoret (Chi-G2), the first leg of the series, and defeated that rival by 3 1/4 lengths in the Gran Premio Gonzalo Bofill De Caso (Chi-G2) on May 27.
No horse has swept the series since Castelnuovo, a Roy colt, in 1994.
Never off the board in six career starts, Truly Funny won for the first time at the highest level.
Trained by Alejandro Aguado for owner Felipe Sullivan’s Stud Matriarca, Truly Funny covered 1,500 meters (7.45 furlongs) on turf in 1:30.41.
Bred by co-owner Pedro Hurtado’s Haras Paso Nevado, Truly Funny is out of the Roy mare Terna (Arg), a Group 1 winner in Argentina who raced in the United States for Gary Tanaka.
