Two international races will be added to the 2010 South American championship Gran Premio Internacional Asociacion Latinoamericana de Jockey Clubes e Hipodromos, increasing the one-day event to three international events worth $450,000 in purses.
Next year’s Gran Premio Internacional Asociacion Latinoamericana de Jockey Clubes e Hipodromos, or Latinoamericano as it has been known since its inception in 1981, will be staged for the third time at Club Hipico de Santiago’s right-handed turf course in Santiago, Chile, on March 7. The 2010 edition of the race will coincide with the bicentennial celebrations of Chile’s independence. The event was last held at Club Hipico de Santiago in 1995.
South America’s invitational Group 1 race for three-year-olds and older at 1 1/4 miles will have a $300,000 purse. The new races to be added are a 1,600-meter (7.95-furlong) event worth $100,000 and a 1,200-meter (5.97-furlong) event, both on the turf.
At the association’s most recent meeting, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the occasion of the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (Arg-G1) on December 12, Mexico was approved to have its first representative in the forthcoming Latinoamericano while Peru was approved for three representatives.
The Argentine Jockey Club’s Hipodromo San Isidro in Buenos Aires will host the race in 2011.
