Marcel Zarour’s and Maria Luisa Solari’s Bonny and Clyde kept her record perfect on Saturday when she powered to a 2 1/2-length win in the $57,148 Clasico Mil Guineas (Chi-G1) at Hipodromo Chile.
Rated in fourth early by jockey Guillermo Pontigo, the Auguri filly collared front-runner Tia Exis in the final furlong and drew away to a convincing victory. Tia Exis’ stablemate Trocatas finished two lengths back in third in the ten-horse field.
The Clasico Mil Guineas and the Clasico Dos Mil Guineas (Chi-G1) for colts on September 5 make up the first leg of the Hipodromo Chile Triple Crown, which awards a $500,000 bonus for sweeping the series.
Trained by Alvaro Fernandez, Bonny and Clyde covered 1,600 meters (7.95 furlongs) in 1:36.98 on a track rated as fast to earn her first stakes victory at the highest level in four career starts.
Bonny and Clyde will next target the Clasico Gran Criterium Mauricio Serrano Palma (Chi-G1), the Hipodromo Chile Triple Crown series' next leg for both colts and fillies on October 3.
A Haras El Sheik homebred, Bonny and Clyde is one of two winners from three starters out of the Kentucky-bred Gone West mare Boundless Quest. Notable family members include 1988 Florida Derby (G1) winner Brian’s Time, perennially one of the leading sires in Japan.
