Delegator wins Celebration Mile

With two runner-up finishes in Group 1 races earlier this season, Delegator impressed new owner Godolphin on Saturday with a convincing victory in the Totesport.com Celebration Mile Stakes (Eng-G2) at Goodwood.

The three-year-old Dansili (GB) colt had not raced in 2½ months since battling European champion Mastercraftsman in stretch and finishing second by a neck in the St. James’s Palace Stakes (Eng-G1) on June 16 at Royal Ascot. He showed no signs of rust in his return for trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

With Frankie Dettori at the reins, Delegator rated in third as Ordnance Row set a moderate pace through six furlongs with Zacinto tracking from second to his outside.

Zacinto seized command with a furlong to run as Delegator was momentarily caught in traffic along the inside. Delegator uncoiled a swift turn of foot once Dettori guided him to clear running room on the outside and wore down the two front-runners to win by 1 ½ lengths as the 4-to-6 favorite.

Delegator covered one mile in 1:41.54 on turf rated as good while earning consideration for a trip to the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) on November 7 at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park meeting.

Second to eventual Investec Epsom Derby (Eng-G1) winner Sea The Stars in the Stanjames.com Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) on May 3, Delegator posted a win and a second-place finish in three starts last year as a two-year-old for trainer Brian Meehan and owner-breeder Poilin Good. In his 2009 debut on April 16 at Newmarket, the bay colt scored a last-to-first, 2¾-length triumph in the Banshahousestables.com Craven Stakes (Eng-G3).

“He has shown a good turn of foot and he will now go to the [one-mile] Queen Elizabeth II Stakes [(Eng-G1) at Ascot on September 26] and then hopefully the Breeders’ Cup Mile," Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said.

"Delegator has demonstrated his class and did what we had hoped. We have not done much with him since he came to us and he was a bit fresh and full of himself.

"The race was slightly slowly run and his turn of foot was decisive.”

Delegator, who is out of the unraced Efisio mare Indian Love Bird, has three wins and three seconds in eight career starts.
