Drilling for Oil abducted, slaughtered in Peru

DRILLING FOR OIL

Grade 3 winner Drilling for Oil, who arrived Peru in July to launch his stud career during the Southern Hemisphere season, was found dead several miles from the farm owned by Hiad Hamide, where he stood.

The six-year-old horse was apparently butchered for meat, Turf Diario reported.

Hamide bought Drilling for Oil, a six-year-old by Giant’s Causeway out of Won’t She Tell, by Banner Sport, from Bruce Lunsford and Lansdon Robbins III. Won’t She Tell is a half sister to 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed.

Robbins and Lunsford had retained North American breeding rights to Drilling for Oil.

Drilling for Oil was apparently stolen from his barn on Tuesday and found slaughtered in the same manner of horses that are slaughtered for meat, according to the publication.

A career earner of $266,756, Drilling for Oil won or placed in nine of 17 starts, capturing three races, including the 2007 Louisville Handicap (G3) at Churchill Downs. He also placed in four other stakes, including a runner-up finish in the 2008 Pan American Handicap (G3) at Gulfstream Park for trainer Ken McPeek before concluding his three-year career with a second-place finish in the ’08 Fifth Third Elkhorn Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Race Course.

Bred in Kentucky by Gainesway Thoroughbreds, Drilling for Oil is half brother to Grade 1-placed stakes winner and sire Dr. Caton, Grade 3 winner White Crown, and stakes-placed winner Confidante, dam of 2006 Prix de Diane Hermes (Fr-G1) (French Oaks) winner Confidential Lady.
