Jay Peg delivers powerful performance in International Cup

South African champion Jay Peg inhaled pacesetter Chevron inside the final 400 meters and drove clear to a 1 3/4-length win in the $2,193,300 Singapore Airlines International Cup (Sin-G1) on Sunday at Kranji.

The five-year-old by Camden Park entered the Singapore Cup off a half-length win in the Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G1) on March 29 at Nad al Sheba for trainer Herman Brown.

“Winning the Dubai Duty Free was the best day of my career, and this isn’t far behind,” said Brown, who conditions Jay Peg for owners Marsh Shirtliff, Selwyn Marcus, Paul Loomes, and Ettiene Braun. “This probably wasn’t as tough a race, so we were entitled to win, and it’s been an unbelievable couple of months.”

Anton Marcus rode Jay Peg in the Dubai Duty Free and was on board for the 2,000-meter (9.94-furlong) Singapore Cup. Jay Peg stalked Chevron from second, about four lengths off the pace, and launched his move with about 400 meters remaining.

Jay Peg powered past Chevron and comfortably held off runner-up Recast and fast-closing Balius to prevail in 2:00.90 on turf rated as good.

A multiple Group 1 winner in his native South Africa, Jay Peg is out of the Al Mufti mare Laptop Lady.
