Meydan City, $11.7-million Kingmambo colt, scores first win

Posted: Wednesday, July 09, 2008 12:52 PM

Meydan City, the most expensive purchase in the history of the Keeneland September yearling sale, delivered a convincing maiden victory in his second career start on Wednesday at Newmarket.

John Ferguson purchased the three-year-old Kingmambo colt for $11.7-million on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum at the 2006 Keeneland September sale. The only higher price for a yearling at public auction was Seattle Dancer, who brought $13.1-million at the 1985 Keeneland July selected yearling sale.

With jockey Frankie Dettori aboard in the blue silks of Godolphin Racing, Meydan City burst to the front from the center of the course with about one furlong remaining and surged clear to cross the line three-quarters of a length in front, completing the 1 1/4-mile event in 2:08.99 on good to soft turf as the 7-to-1 fourth choice.

Meydan City finished third in a one-mile maiden race on June 21 at Newmarket in his debut for trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

Jayeff B Stable bred Meydan City in Kentucky out of stakes winner Crown of Crimson, by Seattle Slew.
