French owner-breeder Wildenstein dead at 67

Alec Wildenstein, a leading French owner and breeder who campaigned multiple Group 1 winner Westerner, died on Monday in Paris. He was 67.
Wildenstein and his brother, Guy, assumed control of their family’s Ecurie Wildenstein and Dayton Investments racing operation in 2001 after the death of their father, Daniel. The elder Wildenstein was a renowned art dealer who, along with his sons, competed in flat racing and jumps.
Dayton Investments bred Westerner, a career earner of $1,885,154 who posted eight of his 11 career wins in French group stakes. The Danehill horse won the 2004 Prix Royal Oak (Fr-G1) (French St. Leger) and also finished second to Hurricane Run (Ire) in the '05 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Lucien Barriere (Fr-G1).
Ecurie Wildenstein also owned Aquarelliste, the winner of the 2001 Prix de Diane Hermes (Fr-G1) (French Oaks) and Prix Vermeille Hermitage Barriere (Fr-G1), and Vallee Enchantee, the winner of the 2003 Prix de Pomone (Fr-G2) and Prix du Conseil de Paris (Fr-G2).
