Lady Shatzi upsets Maitena in Peruvian Oaks

by Michael Burns

Lady Shatzi, a disappointing eighth in last month's Clasico Polla de Potrancas (Peruvian One Thousand Guineas) (Per-G1), bounced back on Sunday to post an upset victory over favored Guineas winner Maitena in the Clasico Enrique Ayulo Pardo (Per-G1) (Peruvian Oaks) at Hipodromo de Monterrico.

Ridden by regular jockey Ivan Quispe, the Privately Held filly prevailed by a head after a stretch duel with runner-up Maitena in the second leg of the Peruvian Quadruple Crown for fillies to stamp herself as one of Peru’s top three-year-old females on dirt.

Guineas runner-up Tiza finished another 4 3/4 lengths back in third and 2 1/2 lengths clear of Danza Guerrera in the ten-horse field.

Trained by 82-year-old Sabino Arias, Lady Shatzi covered 2,000 meters (9.94 furlongs) on dirt in 2:10.60.

A stakes winner at two by a half-length over Maitena in May in the listed Clasico Roberto Alvarez Calderon Granados, Lady Shatzi captured her first Group 1 victory and second career win from six starts for owner Stud Altamar.

Lady Shatzi is out of the winning Septieme Ciel mare Shatzi.
