Lady Marian denies Lush Lashes in Prix de l’Opera

Lady Marian reeled in 2-to-1 favorite Lush Lashes in the stretch and drove clear to a 1 1/2-length win in the $345,150 Qatar Prix de l’Opera (Fr-G1) on Sunday on the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) undercard at Longchamp.
Lady Marian entered off a half-length win on August 24 at Deauville in the Darley Prix de la Nonette (Fr-G3). The three-year-old Nayef filly won a Group 3 race in Germany on July 4 and subsequently finished second, beaten by a neck by Rosenreihe, in the Henkel Preis der Diana-Duetches Stuten-Derby (Ger-G1) (German Oaks) on August 3.
Lush Lashes slipped through a narrow opening on the rail to seize command in the straight of the 2,000-meter (9.94-furlong) race, but Lady Marian closed with a rush from the outside under Dominique Boeuf and overhauled the three-time Group 1 winner with about 100 meters remaining.
"She's a fighter and she won easily in Deauville,” Boeuf told England’s Press Association. "She's very strong, she's a fighter and she likes to race. When the door opened she flew."
Rennstall Gestut Hachtsee's Lady Marian, who is trained by Werner Baltromei, completed the distance on good to soft turf in 2:03.80 to improve to three wins in nine starts. She is out of German stakes-placed winner La Felicita, by Shareef Dancer.
Lush Lashes, who is under consideration for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, suffered a scrape when she went through an opening on the inside.
"She had plenty of room to get through on the rail but has returned with cut on the outside of her off-fore,” trainer Jim Bolger told England’s Press Association. “I think that will be quite sore, and we'll have to see how long that holds her up for before making a plan."
Lush Lashes was 1 1/2 lengths clear of third-place finisher Katiyra.
