Boundless holds off Referred in New Zealand Oaks

by Mike Curry

A pair of overlooked fillies produced a thrilling stretch duel in the $325,280 Gillies Group New Zealand Oaks (NZ-G1) as front-running Boundless held off a determined bid from runner-up Referred to prevail by a neck.

Boundless was sent off as the 12th betting choice in the 18-horse field, and Referred was the 16th betting choice in the 2,400-meter (11.93-furlong) classic race for Southern Hemisphere three-year-old fillies.

Boundless moved up to challenge for the lead under jockey Hayden Tinsley and soon was joined by Tin Goose. Boundless seized a short lead entering the first turn and was pressed from the inside by Tin Goose throughout the race with Referred and Pentura stalking from a few lengths behind the dueling pacesetters.

Boundless maintained a slim advantage approaching the stretch and the chestnut Van Nistelrooy filly edged away from Tin Goose entering the stretch. Referred rallied gamely to challenge Boundless from the outside with about 250 meters remaining and appeared poised to overtake the victor.

Boundless battled back from the inside and dug in to hold off Referred and prevail in 2:28.74 on turf rated as good.

Referred was 1 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Pentura, who nipped Princess Annaliese by a head. Favored Katoon finished a non-threatening seventh.

Stephen McKee trains Boundless for breeder Mrs. C. N. Taylor, who owns her in a partnership along with P. A. Dallimore, T. J. McKee, and P. N. Miller. A half sister to three stakes-placed winners, Boundless is out of the unraced Star Way mare Nothing Less. Group 1 winner Limitless is the grandam of Boundless.
