Fortanyo, La Soraya top big weekend for Haras Rancho Fatima

by Michael Burns

Fortanyo capped a Group 1 double for prominent Peruvian international breeder Jaime Rizo Patron Remy's Haras Rancho Fatima as he powered to a three-length victory in the Clasico Jockey Club del Peru (Per-G1) on Sunday at Hipodromo de Monterrico.

The Clasico Jockey Club del Peru is the country’s premier race for older horses on dirt.

Ridden by Carlos Trujillo, the Farallon P. colt surged past champion two-year old filly Morena in the stretch, completing 2,400 meters (11.93 furlongs) in 2:35.60 on a track rated as fast.

Runner-up Farushenko reeled in third-place finisher Morena.

A disappointing eighth as the favorite in South America’s multi-national Grand Premio Latinoamericano Jockey Clubes (Per-G1) on March 15, Fortanyo earned his first Group 1 victory and improved to five wins in 13 starts. He is out of the Stallion mare Stania.

La Soraya, Peru’s 2006-’07 champion three-year-old filly on turf, closed out her racing career on Saturday with a repeat victory in the Clasico Pamplona (Per-G1), the only Group 1 turf race for fillies and mares on the Peruvian racing calendar.

Trained by Claudia Rizo Patron, La Soraya defeated the Kentucky-bred Bobe Bela by one length and completed 2,000 meters (9.94 furlongs) in 2:03 on firm turf.

Winless since capturing last year’s Clasico Pamplona, La Soraya improved to six wins in 25 starts.

Bred by Haras Rancho Fatima, owner of Pinecrest Stable in Florida and Rancho San Lujan in Argentina, La Soraya is out of the Stack mare Miss Soraya.
