Keeneland September '06 sales topper third in debut

Meydan City, the $11.7-million sale topper at the 2006 Keeneland September yearling sale, finished third in his career debut on Saturday at Newmarket for trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

The bay three-year-old Kingmambo colt broke slowly but moved up to stalk the pace under jockey Philip Robinson and was in ideal position with about one furlong remaining.

Meydan City finished willingly but was no match for winner Harald Bluetooth, who entered off a sixth-place finish in his career debut on June 12.

John Ferguson purchased Meydan City from the consignment of Burleson Farms, agent, on behalf of Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid al Maktoum at the ’06 September sale. The $11.7-million price is the highest in the history of the Keeneland September sale and the second-highest price of all-time for a yearling. Seattle Dancer was purchased for $13.1-million at the 1985 Keeneland July yearling sale.

Bred in Kentucky by Jayeff B Stables, Meydan City is out of the stakes winning Seattle Slew mare Crown of Crimson, a half sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Excellent Meeting.
