David and Patricia Thompson’s Cheveley Park Stud won the Queen’s Silver Cup for the second consecutive year on Sunday at the 2007 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association annual awards, which recognize notable achievements of British breeders.
The Queen’s Silver Cup is presented annually to the leading British-based breeder by prize money amassed in Great Britain and Ireland by progeny from mares who normally reside in the United Kingdom.
Among the standouts bred by Cheveley Park this year are Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes (Ire-G1) winner Echelon and St. James’s Palace Stakes (Eng-G1) winner Excellent Art (GB), who also finished second in the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Monmouth Park.
Excellent Art is by Cheveley Park’s prolific homebred stallion Pivotal, who won his second consecutive Barleythorpe Cup and the BBA Silver Cigar Box at the TBA awards.
The Barleythorpe Cup is given to the leading British-based flat sire by individual winners. Pivotal sired 66 individual winners of 99 races in 2007.
The BBA Silver Cigar Box is presented to the leading British-based flat sire by purse earnings. Pivotal also swept both stallion awards in 2004.
Freshman sire Oasis Dream (GB) won the Tattersalls Silver Salver, awarded to the leading British-based first-crop flat sire by progeny earnings.
The 2003 European champion sprinter sired Willmott Dixon Cornwallis Stakes (Eng-G3) winner Captain Gerrard, and Princess Margaret Independent Newspaper Stakes (Eng-G3) winner Visit among four group or graded stakes winners in his first crop.
Danseuse du Soir, a 19-year-old mare by Thatching, won the HJ Joel Silver Salver as broodmare of the year. She produced Jumbajukiba, winner of the Ladbrokes.com Solonaway Stakes (Eng-G3), and Scintillo, who captured the Premio Gran Criterium (Ity-G1).
