Prominent owner Vittadini dies at 92

Prominent European owner-breeder Dr. Carlo Vittadini, who campaigned 1975 English Horse of the year Grundy, died on Sunday in Milan, Italy. He was 92.

Vittadini raced several standouts during the 1970s, including three-time classic winner Grundy, who won the Epsom (Eng-G1) and Irish Sweeps (Ire) Derbies as well as the Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) in 1975. By Great Nephew, Grundy added a victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Eng-G1) in 1975 en route to divisional and Horse of the Year honors.

Peter Walwyn, who trained Grundy, remembered Vittadini fondly.

“Dr Vittadini was a most marvelous man and we had such wonderful times together,” Walwyn told Racing Post. “After Grundy won the Derby, I had a disagreement with his racing manager because I wanted to go for the Irish Derby, and he wanted to drop down in trip to run in the Eclipse [Stakes]. Fortunately, the owner took my advice. Grundy won very easily at the Curragh. He was an owner who would always listen to his trainer, rightly or wrongly.”

Vittadini also raced champions *Ortis III, Orange Bay, and Brook.

Trainer Luca Camani also worked for Vittadini and spoke fondly of his Italian countryman.

"Dr Vittadini was a gentleman of the old school,” Camani told Racing Post. “He had a deep passion for racing and the breeding of horses. Regrettably, they don't make them like him any more. My sympathies go to [his daughter] Franca and to other members of his family.”
