Multiple Group 1-winning stayer Warrsan dies

Four-time Group 1 winner Warrsan died in England on Monday due to complications from a tumor.

Trained by Clive Brittain for owner-breeder Saeed Manana, the eight-year-old Caerleon horse had not raced since an unplaced finish in the Hong Kong Vase (HK-G1) on December 11 at Sha Tin racecourse.

Out of the High Line mare Lucayan Princess, Warsaan won the Coronation Cup (Eng-G1) in 2003 and '04 and Grosser Preis von Baden (Ger-G1) in '04 and '05.

"It is an absolute tragedy that Warrsan was unable to go onto the life that he so richly deserved as a stallion," Brittain said. "He was one of the family to all of us here at [Brittain's Carlburg Stables in Newmarket] and we will miss him."

Warrsan, a half brother to 1995 Derby Italiano (Ity-G1) winner Luso, also won the 2003 Jockey Club Stakes (Eng-G2) and finished second in the '04 Eclipse Stakes (Eng-G1) and third in the '03 Hong Kong Vase (HK-G1).

"I feel so sorry for Clive Brittain and all his team who loved him as much as I did," Manana said.

Bred in Ireland, Warrsan won nine of 43 career starts and earned $2,782,877.
