Fustas de America jockey challenge begins Saturday

Posted: Tuesday, September 24, 2002

The seventh edition of the Fustas de America, an annual Jockey Challenge event organized by the South American Turf Writers Association and sponsored this year by the Mendoza Regency Casino and Vina Casas del Bosque, will get under way on Saturday, September 28 at Buenos Aires's Hipodromo San Isidro and will conclude at Santiago's Hipodromo Chile on October 26.

The tournament, similar to Lone Star Park's NTRA All-Star Jockey Championship or Santa Anita Park's International Jockey Challenge, reunites some of South America's top leading jockeys and will only consist of a two-phase series this year after the withdrawal of Sao Paulo racetrack in Brazil, the third stop in the series, due to economic hardship.

This year's Fustas de America challenge will have an added attraction with the participation of South America's leading female jockeys.

Lucrecia Carbajal of Argentina, the American and nationalized Chilean Michele Castillo, and the Brazilian Anderlandia Alves, a last-minute replacement for the injured Josiane Gulart, who suffered a serious spill Saturday at Gavea racecourse, will join a strong cast of some of South America's leading jockeys, which include Argentines Juan Noriega and Juan Paulé; Brazilians Altair Domingos and Acedenir Gulart; Chileans Gustavo Barrera and Manuel Martínez; Peruvians Edwin Talaveranos and Uruguayans Julio Méndez and Fabio Guede.

The winner of the Fustas de America will earn $2,500 and will be presented with a trophy.—Michael Burns and Diego Mitagstein
