Smullen retains Irish jockeys' championship

Jockey Pat Smullen rode one winner on the concluding card at Leopardstown on Sunday and collected his second straight Irish jockeys' championship over fast-closing runner-up Michael Kinane.

Smullen started the day five wins ahead of Kinane and added to the advantage with his only victory of the day aboard Sun Seasons in the first race to give him a total of 81, one more than last year's winning mark. Kinane, who has won the Irish riding title 11 times in his career, had a big day but came up short as his three winners on the card left him with 78.

With two races remaining on the card, Smullen broke into celebration with his fiancee trainer, Frances Crowley, who he is scheduled to marry on Tuesday.

"Other than winning Group Ones, keeping the title has been very important for me," Smullen told Sporting Life. "I have always wanted to be champion from the time I started out in racing, and it's great to be ending the season in front again."
