Breeders' Cup Turf runner-up Milan to race next year

Michael Tabor and Susan Magnier's classic-winning three-year-old colt Milan (GB), who finished a game second to Fantastic Light in the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) at Belmont Park on October 27, will not start again this year and will be freshened for a four-year-old campaign.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien had mentioned after the Turf that Milan could make another start this year in either the Japan Cup (Jpn-G1) at Tokyo or the Hong Kong Vase (HK-G1) at Sha Tin, but on Thursday, he confirmed that the son of Sadler's Wells is done for the season.

"Milan has been put away for a campaign next year and won't be running again this season," O'Brien told Racing Post.

After running second to Galileo (Ire) in the Ballysax Stakes in his sophomore debut in April, Milan just missed winning the Prix Lupin (Fr-G1) at Longchamp by a neck, then finished two lengths behind Anabaa Blue after stumbling at the start in the Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby [Fr-G1]) at Chantilly.

Milan finally broke through with consecutive wins in the Great Voltigeur Stakes (Eng-G2) at Yorkshire and the prestigious St. Leger (Eng-G1) at Doncaster. In his final start before crossing the Atlantic for the Turf, Milan finished fifth to Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) runner-up Sakhee in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) at Longchamp on October 7. His sophomore campaign concludes with two wins in eight starts, two seconds, and one third, and earnings of $991,814.
