Book published on Dubai's ruler Sheikh Maktoum

Posted: Wednesday, December 19, 2001

A new book on the life of Dubai ruler Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum, an international Thoroughbred owner and breeder who owns Gainsborough Farm near Versailles, Kentucky, calls him "one of the rare historical leaders that are very close to the hearts of their citizens and to their issues."

Released this week as part of the United Arab Emirates 30th National Day festivities, the book outlines Sheikh Maktoum's role in establishing the UAE Federation and developing the nation economically.

Sheikh Maktoum and his three brothers have strong ties to racing. Along with his younger brother, Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, and other family members, Sheikh Maktoum participates in the global Godolphin Racing stable. This year Godolphin sent out Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Tempera and Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) winner Fantastic Light, as well as Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) runner-up and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) winner Sakhee.

As a breeder, Sheikh Maktoum's representatives include Fantastic Light, who was bred at Gainsborough. Fantastic Light has been honored as Cartier Horse of the Year for Europe in 2001 and also received the Horse of the Year designation from England's Racehorse Owners Association.

The book "sheds light into Sheikh Maktoum's belief in the importance of cooperation with the international community in order to achieve peace and progress for all countries," Gulf News reports.
