South African bloodstock agent Chris Smith dead

Chris Smith, an influential South African bloodstock agent, died last week in Durban after a career that spanned more than three decades and helped shape the country's bloodstock industry."Chris revolutionized the bloodstock industry in this country," said breeder Robin Scott. "He rubbed shoulders with the important people in bloodstock worldwide and ran his business on an international basis. There won't be anyone to match him in that respect."

Smith exerted his influence on South African bloodstock by importing quality yearlings and top stallions from New Zealand. He also introduced leading international buyers to the South African market, including client Robert Sangster, and had ties with Coolmore's John Magnier and David Nagle.

Known for his role in importing stallions to South Africa, Smith also helped establish regional auctions and sponsored the South African Guineas. Smith is survived by his son, Robert John David, who is named after Smith's three good friends—Sangster, Magnier, and Nagle.
