Timber Country colt wins Asahi Hai Futurity

Posted: Wednesday, December 12, 2001

Admire Don, an undefeated son of former American champion and classic winner Timber Country, won the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes on Sunday at Nakayama racecourse in Japan.

Admire Don defeated fellow Japanese-bred Yamano Blizzard by three quarters of a length, with the Kentucky-bred Danzig colt Star El Dorado finishing third. Final time for the one-mile event was 1:33.80, just off the course record of 1:33.60.

Unbeaten in three career starts, Admire Don earned $487,105 for the victory and boosted his bankroll to $671,804. Trained by Hiroyoshi Matsuda, Admire Don is out of Vega, by Tony Bin, and was bred in Japan by Northern Farm.

Timber Country's first major Japanese stakes winner came in September, when three-year-old Mugamuchu won the 1 ¼-mile Derby Grand Prix at Morioka racecourse.

After standing his first five seasons in Japan, Timber Country stood on a one-year lease agreement at Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's Emirates Farm in the United Arab Emirates. He has since returned to Japan to stand the upcoming 2002 season at Shadai Stallion Station on the island of Hokkaido.
