South Australia Jockey Club boosts group stakes purses

Posted: Wednesday, December 05, 2001

In a move to rejuvenate racing in Australia and draw international attention to its Group 1 races, the South Australian Jockey Club has substantially increased purses for group events next autumn.

Purses for both the Adelaide Cup (Aus-G1) and Goodwood Handicap (Aus-G1) have been increased by $55,550 to $206,200 and $154,650, respectively.

Three other Group 1 races at Morphettville have had their purses lifted $25,775—the South Australian Derby (Aus-G1) to $154,650 and the Australasian Oaks (Aus-G1) and South Australia Oaks (Aus-G1) to $128,875. The purse for the Swettenham Stud Stakes (Aus-G2) has also been lifted $25,775 to $128,875.

"These targeted increases protect and enhance the important Group one races over the Adelaide Cup carnival," Ian Hart, manager of the South Australia Thoroughbred Racing Board, told the Age. "The increase for the Swettenham Stud Stakes is part of a deliberate plan to ultimately seek Group one status for this most important weight-for-age event for fillies and mares. We are hopeful other selected group and listed races will receive a boost in a further 12 months."
