English racetrack moving toward construction of all-weather surface

Posted: Tuesday, December 04, 2001

Newbury racecourse Managing Director Mark Kershaw is circulating drawings of a proposed $5.7-million all-weather racetrack there among members of British jockey and trainer associations in hopes of having it constructed by 2004 and eventually hosting a European version of the Breeders' Cup.

"We have two of the three necessary track conditions to attract overseas horses, particularly from America—we're flat and left-handed," he told Racing Post. "We have an excellent turf track; the only thing missing is an all-weather surface."

The new track, to be laid out inside the facility's steeplechase course, would host a proposed 12 additional winter racing events at the southern England course, home of several group events. The track added a new grandstand in November 2000.

England's all-weather racing scene is currently monopolized by three tracks owned by Arena Leisure: Lingfield Park, and Southwell and Wolverhampton racecourses.
