Murtagh to replace Peslier on Caitano for Melbourne Cup

For the third time in a week, Gary Tanaka's world traveler Caitano (GB) has a jockey change for the two-mile Melbourne Cup (Aus-G1) at Flemington on November 6th.Champion Irish jockey Johnny Murtagh is the new rider for seven-year-old son of Niniski, who is winless in seven starts this year, including a fourth-place finish to Silvano (Ger) in the Arlington Million (G1) at Arlington Park on August 18. He replaces France's Olivier Peslier, who was unable to obtain a visa in time to make the trip to Australia. On Wednesday, Peslier had been named as the replacement rider for Kent Desormeaux, after the latter withdrew due to family reasons.

Greg Nichols, Racing Victoria's general manager-racing, said that the situation had caused a nerve-racking few hours when it became apparent Peslier would not be able to solve his passport problem in time for the race, but that everything had balanced out by the news that Murtagh was able to step in at such short notice.

Murtagh is due in Melbourne on Monday.
