Ireland to increase prize money to record level

Irish racing is to carry a new record figure for prize money in 2002, after officials announced a nine percent increase to approximately $40-million.

The Irish Horseracing Authority also detailed a number of new black-type races to be introduced from January 1, with other Pattern races expected to be upgraded.

The prize-money increase is to cover both codes of the sport in Ireland, bot flat and National Hunt racing.—Tony Smurthwaite
