Jockey's five-win day at Ascot costly to English bookmakers

Bookmakers in England will be forced to make large payoffs after champion steeplechase jockey Tony McCoy won five races at Ascot on Saturday.McCoy was rated at nearly 127-to-1 for such a feat, resulting in tens of millions of dollars in payments to his backers.

"Bookies everywhere are sporting black eyes while the nation's punters are celebrating a Christmas bonus to remember," Simon Clare, public relations director for Coral bookmakers told England's Press Association.

The 27-year-old McCoy has been a National Hunt jockey since 1994 and has won six straight championships.

He has been dubbed the "Punters Pal" for his ability to win at long odds.
