Hong Kong suspension keeps Oliver out of New Zealand races

His win aboard Falvelon in the Hong Kong Sprint (HK-G2) may have boosted Damien Oliver's spirits, but his riding in the first race on the Sha Tin card that day is going to cost him some key mounts in the coming weeks.Oliver was found guilty of careless riding aboard Rare Collection in the $89,747 Tokyo Handicap, and suspended from December 19 through January 5. The penalty, which he will not appeal, will keep him from riding Super Impressive in the Railway Handicap (NZ-G1) and Maguire in the Auckland Cup on New Year's Day. The horses' trainers—Lee Freedman and John Collins, respectively—have yet to name replacement riders.

Until the ban, Oliver had been in the midst of a long hot streak, having earned 41 stakes wins and compiled more than $6-million in earnings since the year began.
