Boundary, sire of dual classic winner Big Brown, was euthanized on February 4 at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky, due to the infirmities of old age.
The 22-year-old has been tied to Claiborne Farm for his entire life. By Claiborne sire Danzig, Boundary was bred by Claiborne and William H. Perry’s The Gamely Corp. and raced under the partnership’s banner.
Following his racing career, Boundary returned to Claiborne to stand at stud, which he did for 11 seasons. He was pensioned in 2005 due to declining fertility.
“He was a nice stallion to be around,” Claiborne farm Manager Bradley Purcell said. “The biggest thing I’ll probably remember about Boundary is he was a great breeding stallion. His horses were attractive, they were sound, they were correct, and he could get the classic horse. He proved that in Big Brown.”
Boundary was a specialist at six furlongs during his racing career, running all but one of his career starts at that distance. He never missed the board in eight lifetime starts during two seasons, winning six times and earning $217,777. He won the 1994 A Phenomenon Stakes (G3) at Saratoga Race Course and the 1994 Roseben Handicap (G3) at Belmont Park.
Boundary began his stallion career in 1995, and sired 265 winners from 11 crops through February 6. He sired 26 stakes winners and has total progeny earnings of $35,028,808.
Big Brown, champion three-year-old male of 2008 and four-time Grade 1 winner, is by far Boundary’s best runner as well as his all-time leading earner, with $3,614,500. Big Brown, winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1), was from Boundary’s second-to-last crop. Big Brown’s first foals are two-year-olds this year.
Boundary is the sire of Minardi, a Group 1 winner in England and Ireland, and multiple Grade 1 winner Pomeroy. Boundary sired nine graded stakes winners.
