Stallion Repriced dies at age 24

Repriced, one of only four sons of Roberto still standing in the U.S., died after an apparent heart attack on January 27 at Darby Dan Farm in Lexington. He was 24.

"It’s the real end of an era, with the passing of Repriced,” said John Phillips, owner of Darby Dan Farm. “He represented a connection to the golden era of American stallion.”

Repriced excelled in turf races during his on-track career, winning the 1991 Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar and finishing second in the El Rincon Handicap (G2) at Santa Anita Park. In total, he won five of 21 starts during his three-year racing career for lifetime earnings of $288,412.

Homebred in Florida by Glen Hill Farm, Repriced was trained during his racing career by Willard Proctor.

Repriced stood at Mare Haven Farm in Lexington upon his retirement, then moved to Darby Dan in 2000. Through February 1, he has sired 168 winners from 15 crops of racing age, including five graded stakes winners.

The progeny of Repriced is led by Italian standout Miles Gloriosus, who has won 23 of 81 starts in Italy and France, including six Italian stakes races, for earnings of $860,499. Adding to his international resume is Colombian champion Rotativa.

In North America, Repriced is represented by multiple Grade 3 winners Rich in Spirit and Closeout and Grade 3 winners Spruce Run, No Inflation, and Capital Request.

Roberto, sire of Repriced, was a Darby Dan homebred who went on to become a sire of influence, especially in the turf ranks. His remaining sons standing in the U.S. are Dynaformer in Kentucky, Lindsey’s Roberto in California, and Wistful Roberto in New York.

"It’s well known that my grandfather John W. Galbreath named Roberto for the great Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder, Roberto Clemente,” Phillips said. “Both Robertos were exceptional in their fields and Repriced was a wonderful link to those great years. Though Repriced was largely retired, we are all sad not to see him enjoying his time in his paddock."
