Posted: Monday, January 16, 2012 11:56 AM
Purim, a Grade 1 winner and Kentucky-based sire, was euthanized on Saturday following colic surgery at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington. The ten-year-old son of Dynaformer was scheduled to stand the 2012 breeding season at Richland Hills Farm in Midway, Kentucky, for a fee of $7,500.
Purim began his racing career as a three-year-old, and won his first three races, including the 2005 Arlington Classic Stakes (G3) at Arlington Park. He later registered a victory in the 2006 Razorback Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park, and earned the biggest win of his career in the 2007 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Race Course.
He retired to Richland Hills Farm at the end of his 2007 campaign with nine wins in 23 starts and earnings of $928,543 in three racing seasons. Purim was campaigned during his racing career by his breeder, Edward J. Sukley, and was trained by Tom Proctor.
Purim began his stud career in 2008, and was represented by his first winner when Two Months Rent won a maiden race at Belmont Park on October 8. Two Months Rent is also Purim’s leading earner through January 16, with earnings of $49,125.
In his first crop to race, Purim had six winners from 24 starters. Overall, he has 140 foals from three crops.
Purim is out of the stakes-placed Lord At War (Arg) mare Kirsteena, a dam of three winners from as many starters. He is from the family of 1968 Horse of the Year Dr. Fager.
