Ice Box, 2010 Florida Derby (G1) winner and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) runner-up, will stand the 2012 season at Calumet Farm in Lexington for a fee of $7,500 live foal, payable when the foal stands and nurses.
Ice Box won a maiden special weight race at two, followed with a Gulfstream Park allowance race win in his first start at three. He won the Florida Derby after covering 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.19 and finished second in the Kentucky Derby despite a trouble-filled trip. Trained by Racing Hall of Fame conditioner Nick Zito for owner Robert LaPenta, Ice Box earned $948,068 in three seasons.
Bred in Kentucky by Denlea Park, Ltd., Ice Box is by Pulpit and out of Grade 2 winner Spice Island, by Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Tabasco Cat. Crown of Sheba, dam of Spice Island, is a full sister to Horse of the Year Spend a Buck.
“Ice Box had obvious talent on the racetrack. And to stand a son of Pulpit who already has sired leading sires is a great opportunity,” said Calumet Manager Bill Witman. “Ice Box has the tremendous combination of the A.P. Indy sire line and the Storm Cat line, and his female family provides stamina and durability which matches well with Pulpit’s speed.”
