Volksraad, a six-time champion sire in New Zealand, died on Monday at Windsor Park Stud following injuries suffered in a paddock accident.
A 23-year-old by Green Desert out of stakes-placed winner Celtic Assembly, by Secretariat, Volksraad was a half brother to multiple Group 1 winner Cherokee Rose (Ire).
After starting his stud career in 1993 for a stud fee of $2,500 (New Zealand), Volksraad emerged into one of the Southern Hemisphere’s elite stallions.
He is the sire of 14 Group 1 winners, including New Zealand champion Sir Slick, who has posted 22 wins, 22 seconds, and 17 thirds in 145 career starts over nine seasons, and New Zealand champions One Under and Thriller.
“We have been fortunate to stand a number of champion stallions at Windsor Park and Volksraad rates among the best,” said Nelson Schick, proprietor of Windsor Park Stud.
“His contribution to Windsor Park and the breeding industries in New Zealand and Australia has been immense, and his daughters are now proving such wonderful broodmares at stud.
“We will forever be indebted to Volksraad, who was not only a great stallion but a real character, and we are thankful for the journey we have enjoyed with him these past 19 years.”
