Chocolate Candy dead after paddock accident

Posted: Thursday, December 22, 2011 5:37 PM

Grade 3 winner Chocolate Candy died on Tuesday following a paddock accident at Bar None Ranches in Ototoks, Alberta, Canada, the farm said on its Facebook page.

The five-year-old Candy Ride (Arg) colt arrived at Bar None just three weeks ago after being retired from racing by The Craig Family Trust.

Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, he won four of 21 starts, including the 2009 El Camino Real Derby (G3), and earned $632,205 in four racing seasons. He also finished second to Pioneerof the Nile in the 2009 Santa Anita Derby (G1) and finished fifth in that year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) won by Mine That Bird.

Bar None Thoroughbred manager Mike Vanin said Chocolate Candy had been playing around in a paddock when he crashed into a paddock fence.

According to The Paulick Report, the farm had just completed a deal to shuttle the horse to Argentina for Southern Hemisphere duties.
