Melbourne Cup winner Kingston Rule dead at 25

Kingston Rule, winner of the 1990 Foster’s Melbourne Cup (Aus-G1), died on Saturday at age 25 at Ealing Park in Victoria, Australia, where he had stood for the past 20 years.
Out of 1981 Australian Horse of the Year Rose of Kingston (Aus), Kingston Rule was one of the last living sons of Triple Crown winner Secretariat standing at stud prior to his retirement earlier this year. He was a half brother to Australian Group 3 winner Rose of Portland.
A winner of four races from 13 lifetime starts, Kingston Rule was best known for his track record-setting performance in the Melbourne Cup, where he covered the roughly two mile distance in 3:16.3 at Flemington Racecourse on a turf course labeled as fast. His career earnings totaled $1,171,164.
Kingston Rule was bred in Kentucky by Kingston Park Stud Inc. and was campaigned during his racing career by Mr. and Mrs. David Hains.
As a stallion, Kingston Rule sired 188 winners from 18 crops of racing age, including three graded stakes winners. His progeny is led by multiple Australian Group 1 winner Sheer Kingston, 1997 Crown Oaks (Aus-G1) winner Kensington Rule, and 2008 Tesio Inglis Mile (Aus-G3) winner Miss Badoura.
