Seattle Slew stallion Chestertown Slew dies
Posted: Wednesday, November 16, 2011 12:58 PM
Chestertown Slew was euthanized on November 4 in Arizona following a paddock accident suffered in Louisiana.
The nine-year-old Seattle Slew stallion suffered from equine wobbler syndrome, a spinal cord injury, following the accident and was treated at the Prescott Animal Hospital Equine Center in Prescott, Arizona. Chestertown Slew had recently been transported from Louisiana to stand at Little Kentucky LLC in Waddell, Arizona.
From the final crop of Seattle Slew, Chestertown Slew won five of 21 career races, mainly excelling on the turf, and earned $171,826. He placed in stakes races at Belmont Park and Turf Paradise.
The New York-bred was last campaigned by Nevada-based owner Shawn Haggstrom of Oakmont Stables, who first stood Chestertown Slew at Fanlew Farms in Sarepta, Louisiana. Chestertown Slew covered 54 mares in his first season in Louisiana in 2010. His first two-year-olds will race in 2012.
“He was an amazing stallion and we were blessed in having him,” Haggstrom said. “We had very high hopes for him as a stallion and this injury was devastating to all of us involved with Oakmont Stables. This stallion had everything we wanted; pedigree, confirmation and Intelligence. He was the whole package. He will be truly missed.”

So sad to see another son of Seattle Slew die early. It seems he has had more than his share of that happening to his bloodline!
BTW, Seattle Slew's last crop had only four foals, all fillys. Chestertown Slew must have been from Slew's second-to-last crop. The crop before that(2001) also only had four foals, two colts and two fillys. I am fortunate to have one of those sons standing in my barn right now! Love him!
