Successful dual hemisphere sire Bernstein was euthanized on October 23 following complications from colic.
Bernstein, who stood at Shane Ryan’s Castleton Lyons in Lexington, was well-received in Argentina and finished as leading sire there in 2006 and 2007. Ryan said the 14-year-old Storm Cat stallion will be missed.
“Today is a very sad day for all of us on the farm as Bernstein was a very special stallion that in an all-too-brief career at stud has sired top class horses throughout the world,” Ryan said.
Bernstein boasts four champions in Argentina, including 2007 Horse of the Year Storm Mayor. Other Argentine champions by Bernstein are Storm Military (Arg), Savoir Bien (Arg), and Storm Marcopolo (Arg). Bernstein also is the sire of Goshawk Ken, the 2007 champion two-year-old colt in Japan.
Bernstein had stood at Castleton Lyons in Lexington since 2005 after starting his career in 2001 at Buck Pond Farm in Lexington. Through October 23, Bernstein’s progeny earned $33,891,716. He has 609 winners from 832 starters.
On the track, Bernstein won Group 3 races in Ireland at two and three. He won four of eight starts in two seasons, earning $173,120.
Ryan thanked doctors and staff at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and Castleton Lyons for their efforts to try to save Bernstein’s life.
“I would also like to thank all of our clients that supported this stallion and I would hope that Bernstein’s influence in the bloodstock world will be felt for many years to come,” he said.
