D’Accord, one of the last sons of Triple Crown winner Secreteriat, was euthanized on Monday due to the infirmities of old age. He was 32 years old.
D’Accord spent his final years at Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue in Pawling, New York, after being pensioned from stud duty in 1998.
Out of Canadian Horse of the Year and champion broodmare Fanfreluche, D’Accord was bred in Virginia by Bertram and Diana Firestone. He was a full brother to Canadian champion Medaille D’or and a half brother to two-time Canadian Horse of the Year L’Enjoleur, multiple Canadian champion La Voyageuse, and stakes winner Grand Luxe.
D’Accord carried on his dam’s run of progeny success, posting five wins in ten starts, including a 7 1/2-length victory in the 1981 Breeder’s Futurity (G2) at Keeneland Race Course. He won five of ten career starts and earned $163,368.
After his retirement from racing, D’Accord stood the bulk of his stallion career in New York. From 15 crops, he sired 219 winners from 335 foals for earnings of $15,307,000. He is also a two-time leading broodmare sire in Jamaica.
D’Accord’s progeny was led by multiple Grade 2 winner North East Bound, a hard-campaigning gelding who won ten career stakes races, including the 2000 Meadowlands Cup Handicap (G2) and the 2001 Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (G2). North East Bound finished a close second in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Churchill Downs.
Other leading runners by D’Accord include Grade 1 winner Montreal Red and multiple graded stakes winners Lady D’Accord and Yestday’s Kisses.
