Kentucky Derby runner-up Invisible Ink dies

Posted: Friday, July 08, 2011 5:02 PM

by Tim Nichols

Invisible Ink, runner-up in the 2001 Kentucky Derby (G1), was euthanized on Thursday at Pin Oak Lane Farm in New Freedom, Pennsylvania, following complications from equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM).

The 13-year-old by Thunder Gulch out of the winning Conquistador Cielo mare Conquistress was standing at the farm for an advertised of $1,500 after standing the previous eight years at Rising Hill Farm in Ocala.

“He was very nice; a kind horse to be around,” said Pin Oak Lane Farm’s William J. Solomon, V.M.D.

Invisible Ink’s top progeny from six crops of racing age include Panamanian champion imported three-year-old filly Blessink; multiple stakes winner and $315,087-earner Fearless Eagle, and multiple graded stakes-placed winner Honey Chile.

On the track, Invisible Ink posted four wins, three second, and one third from 14 career starts and earned $465,088 in three seasons for John Fort’s Peachtree Stable. After finishing third in the 2001 Florida Derby, the bay colt finished second to Monarchos in the Kentucky Derby at odds of 55-to-1.
