Ann of the Dance surged from last to win the fifth race at Arlington Park on Saturday and become the first winner for 2007 champion turf male English Channel.
The two-year-old filly closed from last in the field of seven under Diego Sanchez to win by one length as the 1.90-to-1 favorite for trainer James DiVito and owner William D. Cox, covering five furlongs on the synthetic Polytrack surface in 1:01.19. Bred by Bluegrass Hall, Ann of the Dance is one of seven winners from eight starters out of Dans La Ville (Chi), by Winning.
English Channel stands for an advertised fee of $25,000 at Lane’s End in Versailles, Kentucky. The nine-year-old by Smart Strike has 110 two-year-olds in his first crop.
Out of the unraced Theatrical (Ire) mare Belva, English Channel posted 13 wins, including six Grade 1 wins, four seconds, and one third in 23 career starts and earnings of $5,319,028 in four seasons.
English Channel was named champion turf male of 2007 after a season that included victories in the John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), United Nations Stakes (G1), and the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (G1). In 2006, English Channel won the United Nations, Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational, and Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1) for owner James T. Scatuorchio and trainer Todd Pletcher.
