Cee’s Song, dam of Horse of the Year and prominent Central Kentucky sire Tiznow, died on April 20 from the infirmities of old age. She was 25.
The Seattle Song mare out of Lonely Dancer, by Nice Dancer, resided at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Versailles, Kentucky, after she was purchased for $2.6-million at the 2001 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, a few days after Tiznow captured his unprecedented second straight Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) victory.
Cee’s Song delivered her final live foal, a Giant’s Causeway filly named Lady Mariah, in 2006. She was barren in 2010 on a cover to Henrythenavigator and was not bred again.
“She passed away in her sleep; I think her heart just gave out,” Ashford manager Dermot Ryan said. “She had been doing great up until then. She was a fabulous mare.”
Cecilia Straub-Rubens purchased Cee’s Song and Tiznow’s sire, Cee’s Tizzy, on the advice of Michael Cooper. Cee’s Song, a $50,000 yearling, won a $40,000 maiden-claiming race and produced nine foals by Cee’s Tizzy, who stood at Harris Farms in California, was pensioned last year.
Her second foal, the gelding Budroyale, was claimed twice before he emerged as a top older horse, winning five graded stakes races and the Wells Fargo Bank California Cup Classic Handicap and finishing second to Cat Thief at 26.50-to-1 in the 1999 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).
Tiznow struck the next year in the 2000 Classic at Churchill Downs and prevailed again in 2001 at Belmont Park. Straub-Rubens and Cooper raced the California-bred in partnership in a career that included victories in the 2000 Super Derby (G1) and 2001 Santa Anita Handicap (G1). He earned $6,427,830 and led the freshman sire list in 2005, before ranking among the leaders on the general sire list in 2008 and 2009.
Tiznow stands at Kenny Troutt’s WinStar Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, for $75,000.
John Ferguson purchased a weanling full sister to Tiznow at the 2001 Keeneland November sale for $950,000. Eventually named Tizdubai, she won the 2003 Sorrento Stakes (G2) at Del Mar. The same year, another full sibling, Tizbud, scored in the California Cup Classic. Tizbud stands at Harris Farms.
The Cee’s Tizzy-Cee’s Song cross also produced the unraced mare Tizamazing, whose three-year-old son, Awesome Patriot, is a candidate for the Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 11.
Barnett Enterprises, an entity related to Coolmore, bred the last few foals out of Cee’s Song, including a winning Storm Cat mare named You’re Beautiful who sold for $1.2-million in foal to Mr. Greeley to Denali Stud, agent for Bryant Prentice, at the 2008 Keeneland November sale.
